What Is Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment?

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment is a designated period each year during which individuals who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan can make changes to their coverage. This enrollment period is separate from the general Medicare Annual Enrollment Period and is specifically aimed at helping beneficiaries who wish to adjust their existing Medicare Advantage plans.

Key Dates

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment period runs from January 1 to March 31 each year. During this time, eligible individuals can review and change their Medicare Advantage coverage to better meet their healthcare needs.

Who Can Use This Enrollment Period?

Only those who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan as of January 1 can take advantage of this open enrollment period. If you have Original Medicare (Parts A and B) or are not enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, this enrollment window does not apply.

What Changes Can Be Made?

·         Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another Medicare Advantage plan.

·         Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare (Parts A and B).

·         Sign up for a stand-alone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan if you return to Original Medicare.

What Changes Cannot Be Made?

·         You cannot switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan during this period.

·         You cannot sign up for a Part D plan if you are already in Original Medicare during this period.

Why Is This Important?

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment period gives individuals a chance to make adjustments to their coverage if they find their current plan does not meet their needs, or if they want to explore better options for their healthcare or prescription drug coverage. Making informed changes during this period can help ensure beneficiaries have the coverage that best fits their medical requirements and financial situation.
